The evolving Iran-region conflict is no longer a distant geopolitical issue—it is actively shaping the threat environment inside the United States.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ongoing tensions have created a heightened threat landscape, with increased risks spanning both cyber and physical domains. Pro-Iranian cyber actors and hacktivist groups are expected to conduct attacks against U.S. networks, ranging from disruption to more targeted operations. 

At the same time, DHS warns of a more unpredictable danger: individuals or small groups within the U.S. who may become inspired by overseas events. These actors can mobilize quickly, often without direct coordination, making them harder to detect and prevent. 

Recent large-scale strikes in early 2026 have only intensified these risks. Cyber incidents linked to Iran-aligned groups and rising concerns about retaliatory activity highlight how global conflict increasingly translates into domestic exposure. 

For businesses and security leaders, this shift is critical. The line between international conflict and domestic risk is thinner than ever. According to ASIS International, effective protection programs are grounded in risk assessment, advance planning, intelligence gathering, and continuous evaluation — not reactive deployment (ASIS International, 2021). The emphasis is on identifying vulnerabilities before they are exploited.

Reflections on the Brown University Shooting and the Importance of Prepared Security

On December 13, 2025, a tragic shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, claimed the lives of two students and wounded nine others during a study session in the Barus & Holley Engineering Building. The violent incident unfolded during finals week and sent shockwaves through the campus community and beyond.

In the days that followed, law enforcement coordinated a substantial investigation involving local, state, and federal partners. Enhanced surveillance footage and community tips supported search efforts, and ultimately officials identified a suspect linked to both the Brown shooting and another fatal attack outside the campus. Authorities later confirmed the suspect was found deceased from a self-inflicted injury as the manhunt concluded. 

As we mourn the lives lost and support the healing of survivors and families, this tragedy reinforces critical lessons for security leaders in all sectors:

  • Preparedness matters. Robust emergency alert systems and response protocols can save lives.
  • Collaboration saves time. Coordination among security teams, law enforcement, and community members is essential in a crisis.

A serious incident at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh highlights the urgent role private security plays when public safety resources are strained. On the night of November 13, a 45-year-old man allegedly pulled a fire alarm in the hospital’s emergency-room lobby, then brandished a knife and attacked a security guard. In response, an armed guard fired one round — the attacker was pronounced dead. A bystander was also wounded, though her injuries are reportedly non-life-threatening. NBC New York+2CBS News+2

This tragic event underscores a larger reality: with police shortages and increasing demands on public safety, hospitals and institutions are increasingly reliant on private security. But while private guards can bridge critical safety gaps — especially in high-risk settings like emergency rooms — this incident raises important questions about training, protocols, accountability, and the burden placed on private security personnel.

As communities explore public–private safety partnerships, several priorities must guide decision-makers and security leaders:

  • Rigorous training & scenario preparedness — private officers may face life-and-death situations; proper training matters.

  • Clear rules of engagement and oversight — even justified force demands transparency and clarity.

  • Support systems for bystanders and staff — collateral trauma, as seen when a bystander was injured, must be addressed.

  • Collaboration with public safety & health institutions — coordination ensures that private security augments, not replaces, public-safety infrastructure.

Institutions can no longer assume security is a “nice to have.” As police staffing challenges persist, private security is becoming a frontline defense — especially in environments where lives, health, and community safety intersect.
