Security: A Small Price to Pay to Protect our Community

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Cambridge City Council unanimously agreed to hire five full-time security guards with a mobile detail to improve community safety.

This is a small price to pay for taking care of our community, keeping it safe, and keeping it clean.

Communities are seeing vandalism of storefronts, community parks, and in our neighborhoods. Securing a mobile security team helps deter lawlessness by simply being visible. Security details make a big impact in deterring vandalism and damage.

There is a savings by hiring a security patrol, as the number of after hour incidents declines. This in turn results in fewer instances of having to send out law enforcement officers as well as the costs of cleaning up vandalism or damage. It also frees up law-officers to engage with our community and other aspects of keeping our streets safe.

Detecting threats in train stations without compromising citizens’ privacy.

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Surface transportation such as subway systems can be a unique security challenge due to the large crowds of travelers and the open, unstructured environment. Public safety officials (including mass transit operators, mass transit police, and state and federal law enforcement teams) need a capability to detect potential threat items on persons and in bags without negatively impacting the speed of travel.

How do we detect terror threats in train stations without searching people or compromising their privacy?

A video algorithm detects bags left behind and cutting-edge video forensic tools are some of the technologies used to secure train stations and protect the traveling public.

Security Challenges to the Transportation Industry

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

The transportation industry is unique because it plays a role in both the minutiae of everyday life and the overall economy’s well-being. Providing uninterrupted and efficient transportation services depends heavily on the safety and security of transportation entities.

Due to the vast amount of people frequenting transit stations and the importance of the items on ships and ferries, the transportation sector faces multiple challenges that evolve as the industry advances.

Safeguarding Critical Infrastructure In The Transportation Sector

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

In today’s reality, the consequences of inaction are too severe to ignore. Threats in the transport sector, including rail, go beyond the fear of potential financial losses; they can compromise passenger and cargo safety, disrupt economies and endanger national security.

It threatens the things that we care for the most, including the safety of our close ones.

Crisis Planning: School Bus Security Protocols

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

School transportation officials are assessing school bus security and emergency planning as an important part of crisis planning. School bus drivers are the first and last school employees to see school children on a daily basis. Buses are simply extensions of our schools.

Many school bus drivers have not received adequate training, and in some cases any training at all, on dealing with school safety threats. In addition to student misconduct, irate parents also pose a concern to school bus drivers.

There’s a big difference between crowd control – versus crowd management.

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

There is no federal law on crowd safety. But the National Fire Protection Association’s 101 Life Safety Code is considered the gold standard. Many of us remember the Who concert tragedy decades ago.

There’s a big difference between crowd control – or trying to keep people in designated areas – versus crowd management, which considers the psychology of the crowd and predicts what problems might arise.

Private Security Guards Have Become a Last Resort for Public Safety

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

The rampant and uncontrolled criminal activity throughout New York State. It’s unacceptable. Robberies are happening in broad daylight, smash-and-grabs, flash mobs, and criminals filling garbage bags with stolen goods are now common.

Eventually, businesses will be forced to shut down because they won’t be able to ensure the safety of their employees or customers.

Despite the weak on crime policies it’s our priority at NEXGEN Protection to do our part to ensure the safety of employees and the public when on the job.

Dutchess Security Guard Arrested for Selling Drugs to Homeless

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Hudson River Housing Security Guard was arrested for selling cocaine at the shelter. This behavior is deplorable, clearly the screening process for hiring security staff needs to be looked at.

My firm thoroughly screens and trains our guards to uphold the mission and values of NEXGEN Protection Services, we  do not tolerate any violations to our code of conduct.

Leverage the latest technologies to mitigate the ever increasing lawlessness.

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Retailers are in the business of selling products and assuring their employees and customers that their sales floor is safe and secure. It is critical for businesses to leverage the latest technologies available to mitigate the risk of ever increasing wanton violence, theft, and lawlessness for life safety and loss prevention.

Firearms

Firearms & Public Safety: Operational Guidelines & Procedures

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Certain operational roles in public safety mandate the requirement for a lethal force response, issued in the form of a firearm. Depending on the role, the firearms are usually limited to smalls arms only in the form of handguns and long-arms. With the provision of firearms comes the necessity for appropriate training and regulations governing the issue and use of these operational tools.

If operational personnel decide to undertake job roles that require a lethal force option, they have an obligation to be highly competent in the use of that tool, which includes appropriate knowledge and skills for safe and professional use of that tool in an operational context (as opposed to simply a training context). In the first instance, the burden of responsibility falls to the individual user to survive the operational environment, physically and legally.
