A-Practical-Checklist-An-On-Site-Emergency

A Practical Checklist An On-Site Emergency

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Essential items to include in every emergency checklist are:

  • An evacuation plan with clearly marked exits and assembly points.
  • Emergency contact numbers, including local emergency services and poison control.
  • Location and proper use of fire extinguishers, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and first-aid kits
  • Procedures for shutting down utilities, such as gas and electricity, in an emergency.
  • Food safety protocols in case of power outages or other events compromising food quality.
  • Communication plan for informing employees and guests of the situation.
  • Shelter-in-place procedures, if applicable.

Customizing the checklist is critical to ensure its effectiveness. Depending on your organization’s specific circumstances, you might need to add additional items.

A-Combined-Security-Solution-That-Leverages-AI-Human-Intelligence-Is-The-Answer

A Combined Security Solution That Leverages AI & Human Intelligence Is The Answer

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Internet-connected cameras and remote monitoring capabilities make streaming 24/7 video data to mobile devices easy. Businesses can now outsource this technology to third-party providers, meaning the onus is no longer on owners to build and manage their surveillance systems in-house.

Artificial intelligence (AI) that enables computers and systems to derive meaningful information from digital images, videos, and other visual inputs — and take actions or make recommendations based on that information.

People have become wary of AI-only solutions, and a combined approach that maximizes the strengths of both AI and human intelligence will be the gold standard for businesses going forward.

Making Safety and Security Intrinsic In Our Schools

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

People often feel safer in a physical space that has been updated and secured. Safety planning requires us to look at all layers involved, including technology, equipment, processes, procedures, and training.

The most effective security programs can enable seamless additions of new security capabilities and resources to support expanding operations. This can include adding new security technologies, increasing the number of security personnel, or expanding security coverage to new locations or business units.

Why Construction Sites Need Proactive Security

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Construction sites are undoubtedly one of the most challenging environments to protect from a security perspective. Construction sites are a virtual free-for-all with multiple points of entry and exits with various contractors and subcontractors coming and going at different times throughout the day.

Without proactive security measures in place, construction sites are at risk from thieves attracted to goods. From materials, tools, equipment and even fuel, thieves can be enticed by open construction sites. These open sites are also at risk of vandalism.

Factors to Consider for Your Retail Security System

Factors to Consider for Your Retail Security System

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Physical security solutions for retail offer benefits that go far beyond simply improving security. Today’s systems gather a wealth of data from video surveillance systems, access control, automatic license plate readers, identity management, and a variety of other sensors and systems.

Consider factors such as the size and layout of your property, potential vulnerabilities, and any specific security concerns you may have. Conducting a comprehensive evaluation will help you determine the type and extent of security measures required to safeguard your premises effectively.

Supply Chain Logistics Requires a Multi-Faceted Security Approach

Supply Chain Logistics Requires a Multi-Faceted Security Approach

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Supply chain theft has become a global issue and is estimated to cost billions of dollars in losses annually. Retailers are facing numerous challenges in ensuring the safe transport of high value items from manufacturing facilities to their stores as the level of cargo theft increases rapidly.

Protecting valuable cargo in logistics requires a multi-faceted approach that encompasses risk assessment, secure packaging, advanced tracking systems, route planning, and well-trained personnel.

Organizations are Increasing Spending on Proactive Security

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Organizations are increasing spending on proactive security solutions. These solutions include attack surface management and risk-based vulnerability management.

A proactive defense strategy, when combined with reactive security, creates a high level of security to mitigate the overall risk to the organization.

Security Risk Assessment: Considerations for Public Venues

Security Risk Assessment: Considerations for Public Venues

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Negative fan behavior. Weather issues. Cyberattacks. Rogue drones. Security incidents at sporting events are impacting athletes, fans, and stadium staff, as well as making headlines in the media.

Other incidents, such as a crowd crush at a white-out game at Penn State and sustained injuries from a lightning strike at a UCF game, are also concerning. National news of active shooters, along with the constant threat of terrorism, accentuate the importance of preparedness.

Any public venue must consider event specific risk assessments to identify threats and vulnerabilities. Outcomes from this process will inform planning efforts, including the development of policies and procedures.

Corpus-Christi-public-libraries-will-now-have-armed-security-guards

Corpus Christi public libraries will now have armed security guards.

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

Effective immediately, all Corpus Christi public libraries will now have armed security guards inside. Previously, only the La Retama location had armed security guards.

The school’s staff feel they don’t have to worry if some crazy person wants to come in with a gun or rifle. At least there is some security, we feel that having them armed would be a deterrent.

The reasoning isn’t linked to one specific incident but rather several incidents libraries have seen over the years.

Do-Armed-Guards-Prevent-School-Shootings

Do Armed Guards Prevent School Shootings?

Frank Costa, President Nexgen Protection Services –

In 2022, there were 51 active shootings that caused injury or death — excluding suicides — in K-12 schools or on school buses. There are roughly 100,000 public schools in the United States, meaning that these incidents are quite rare. Still, widespread worry fuels an active national debate about how to curb these shootings.

Have guns stopped mass shootings at schools?

There are only a handful of documented cases in which an armed security guard or stationed police officer has stopped a school shooting.

A 2013 study conducted by the FBI analyzed 160 active shooter incidents found that most attacks are carried out in “a matter of minutes,” making it difficult for armed guards to be in the right place at the right time.

Even when law enforcement was present or able to respond within minutes, civilians often had to make life and death decisions, and, therefore, should be engaged in training and discussions on decisions they may face.

For mass shootings more broadly, there’s evidence that unarmed bystanders have stopped more attacks in these early minutes than armed people.
